[Fab] has built just such a device, taking advantage of modern construction techniques, and dubbed it the WinDIY. [hackaday.io]

The WinDIY design is mostly 3D printed, with a familiar three-bladed design. The diameter of the rotor is 1.2 m, meaning that braking and regulating the turbine is required for safety in high winds.
