White House suspends Joe Biden aide who reportedly threatened Politico journalist - ABC News [abc.net.au]:

White House deputy press secretary TJ Ducklo has been suspended for a week without pay after he reportedly issued a sexist and profane threat to a journalist seeking to cover his relationship with another reporter.

Key points:

  • Politico's Tara Palmeri had been investigating Mr Ducklo's relationship with an Axios journalist
  • The White House has described his alleged threats against Palmeri as "a heated conversation"
  • President Joe Biden previously promised to instantly fire any staffers treating others with disrespect

Vanity Fair reported that Mr Ducklo had made threats — including "I will destroy you" — to a Politico correspondent who was reporting a piece about Mr Ducklo's recently disclosed relationship with an Axios reporter, Alexi McCammond.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki wrote on Twitter that Mr Ducklo had been suspended for a week without pay and will not work with Politico reporters again.

Ms Psaki said Mr Ducklo had apologised to the Politico reporter, Tara Palmeri, "with whom he had a heated conversation about his personal life".

"He is the first to acknowledge this is not the standard of behaviour set out by the President," she added.

Ms Psaki said while she had not spoken about the incident with President Joe Biden, Mr Ducklo and aides "at the highest levels" of the White House's communications team had apologised for the incident.

"No-one wants anyone to feel uncomfortable, to be put in an uncomfortable position," she said.

An Axios spokeswoman said McCammond disclosed the relationship to her editors in November and was reassigned from a beat covering the White House.

'I will fire you on the spot'

The suspension comes after Mr Biden, who took office last month, vowed to take a hard line on any incivility among members of his administration.

"If you're ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot … no ifs, ands or buts," Mr Biden told political appointees during a virtual swearing-in ceremony.

"Everybody is entitled to be treated with decency and dignity," Mr Biden said.

Former president Donald Trump's White House was known for an adversarial relationship with reporters, with Mr Trump and his lead spokespeople frequently picking fights with and lobbing personal attacks at reporters from behind the podium.

But the Biden White House sought to strike a more cordial and professional tone with the Washington press corps from the start, installing a cadre of seasoned Washington communicators led by Ms Psaki.

On her first day behind the podium, Ms Psaki told reporters: "I have deep respect for the role of a free and independent press in our democracy and for the role all of you play."
