A clever hack [anfractuosity.com], using gnuradio for the wave modulation encoding, but detouring the I/O to the audio chain, enables laptops running Linux to establish full duplex network links in the ultrasound range.
No words about the bandwidth, but the example they provided may bring some nostalgia over an era predating dialup modems [wikipedia.org].
