Japan's shrinking population has been a problem for many years. This sort of problem can feed on itself, as the increasing workload on the non-elderly makes raising a family more difficult. Harassment of pregnant workers, called matahara, is common, with the worst of it actually coming from other women. Workers are being pressured to abort [breitbart.com] their unborn. This is likely related to the effect that motherhood has in the workplace, with businesses rarely hiring temporary help to fill in for women who give birth. Japan currently has less than 2/3 of the births per woman required just to keep the population stable.
