Chernobyl sarcophagus replacement nears completion

In an impressive feat of engineering, the Chernobyl sarcophagus built to contain the highly radioactive remains of one of the planet's worst nuclear disasters is finally being replaced [theengineer.co.uk] by "New Safe Confinement" (NSC). A large steel arch will provide protection from the elements. This is an engineering project that should appeal to just about any geek: automation, robotics, chemistry, civil engineering, nuclear science.. and I'd wager that even the Linux kernel is involved somewhere in there, too.
