After spending $7 billion to explore for undersea oil and gas off Alaska, Royal Dutch Shell announced that it will end the 7-year project. The company had drilled one well, in the Chukchi Sea [wikipedia.org]. A press release [shell.com] said there were “...indications of oil and gas in the Burger J well, but these are not sufficient to warrant further exploration...”. Other reasons given were “the high costs associated with the project, and the challenging and unpredictable federal regulatory environment in offshore Alaska.”
