California virus-fighting efforts hampered by data delays:

California has stopped removing or adding to a list of counties facing more restrictions on businesses and schools as it tries to resolve a technical problem with the state's coronavirus testing database, health officials said Wednesday.

The state has recorded a highest-in-the-nation 525,000 positive tests. But California health officials say the true number is even higher. They don't know how much so until they can add backlogged testing data and fix the problem with the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange, also known as CalREDIE.

The incomplete data in the nation's most populous state has hampered public health officials' ability to follow up with those who test positive and contact people who have been around them to limit the spread.

"Back in February and March when we didn't have enough testing, I would say we felt blind," said Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County's public health director. "I would say now we're back to feeling blind. We don't know how the epidemic is trending."

Why don't they just all wear a mask and then the virus will disappear because masks make people invulnerable?

Can you dummies please just learn reality instead of continuing your death cult paranoia?

Non N95 masks are used to stop YOUR breath from easily expanding into a cloud around you, thus limiting the spread of any viral particles and completely stopping larger droplets.

Yes you can still catch the virus through a cloth mask, though it will reduce the viral load a tiny bit which is still useful.

Yes you can still transmit the virus through a cloth mask, but the area affected around your mouth breathing face is drastically reduced. So continue to use social distancing even with a mask on.

    >"... We don't know how the epidemic is trending."

I thought you could trace epidemics by those who fall ill.

Do you trace pneumonia deaths and patients or not? Then you can trace covid.

But, I know, people say: covid is different, it is more contagious/resistant/deadly/whatever

OK then expect a peak of actual patients. Here, the people from the south working in Lombardy (where covid raged in a nasty way, according to stats) were able to get back home in the south because the politicians mistakenly announced the lockdown one day in advance. (given the kind of mistakes made by putting covid patients in nursing homes, I attribute the error to malice, anyway an italian link is https://www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/2020/03/08/coronavirus-la-fuga-di-notizie-sul-decreto-cnn-bozza-ricevuta-dallufficio-stampa-della-regione-lombardia-che-smentisce-falso/5729557/). The states with far-right governments are also doing the worst (per capita).

You are too blind to see that would be *GOOD* news. That means this thing is not as bad as made out to be. It means most of us have it or have had it and did not notice. Or do we need to lock down further? Perhaps we can have magic robots deliver food from the central commissary also make sure you only take your ration. Perhaps we can do like in Cuba and North Korea and the Soviet Union and turn off peoples electricity and water when they do not agree with you politically. Oh wait LA did just that.

You are being told lies to manipulate you they use fear and hate to do it. The CDC is currently reviewing all the cases of death. Nearly 1/4th of the reported numbers were from other causes of people who also tested positive. You have a 80% chance of dying within 6 months of entering a nursing home. That is because usually by the time you are going to a nursing home it is not good. You can not take care of yourself. Anyone who has had to put a parent into one of these places can tell you that. Huge swaths of those numbers were reported as covid. HCQ is effective against SARS but not covid. That would be a *very* interesting discovery as they are very closely related genome wise! But instead we are to wait for this magic cure. Sometime next year. If HCQ is effective say 1% of the time. Why do we not let people take it under prescribed care? That would be 1% less death and suffering. Yet we wait to cling to a test where the doctors intentionally overdosed their patients to say HCQ is bad. In my eyes that would be evil.

You have this magic boogie man of the 'alt right' in your head that does not exist. The DNC are the fascists. They are the ones who want you locked up and controlled. You personally are letting them do it to you. You then go on to preach the good word that other should be cool with that. They are not cool with you stripping them of their freedom of choice. In the first place, it's not true. Some of them handled it well, others didn't. And if they have a high background level of other diseases it's easy to miss COVID, as most serious cases look just like pneumonia.

Vietnam took advantage of being a dictatorship with the trust of the citizenry, and ordered drastic quarantines before any serious cases showed up. That immediately cut transmission down to zero, so they missed the first wave. Unfortunately, they then loosened up and a few cases came in from outside, and now they're needing to do it again. But by stepping on it hard and early they've been able to essentially stop COVID with, over all, much less quarantines than the US or UK.

Some places are very rural, with poor transportation and low population density. They can usually get by with just social isolation, and communication by phone or field calls (shouting at your neighbor in his field while you're working in your own field).

And, really, even fairly close congregation outside with a decent breeze isn't going to be a problem. But fairly close is about 6 feet. Perhaps 5. Easy conversational distance, but not close enough to "press the flesh". For some societies that's fairly normal, a little bit more distant that usual, but not too much. The Finns are reported to find it as close as they're comfortable anyway.

But a large part of the answer is "it looks like pneumonia, so if you don't test you won't find it"...but this is truer if there's already a high background level of disease. Or if people don't usually go to a hospital. Or if tests just aren't available.

So there's a multipartite answer to your question. But the simple answer is that denying you have a problem and sticking your head in the sand doesn't make the problem go away.

Another factor that is not mentioned is that it is the old, or already sick, or more commonly both, who die of this. In dysfunctional societies many of these potential victims have already succumbed to something else. It is the developed worlds medical systems keeping them alive longer that perversely increases the COVID toll.

This explains the USA's high death toll, it is a mix of keeping sick people alive and shitty preventative care that leaves them unhealthy.
