Not only was Aliens the best sequel, and IMO the best of the entire Aliens franchise, you have to see the extended edition to enjoy the stuff they cut out of the theatrical release which provides significant additional context about Ripley and what she is struggling with.

Alien and Aliens were both amazing films IMHO. 3 and Resurrection were OK but had their moments of brilliance. Prometheus and Covenant were entertaining but unmemorable to me. The two AVP films were also entertaining but unmemorable other than how brutal they seemed.

I sort of understand why they cut out some of that stuff since the movie was already over two hours long. But other things made absolutely no sense and changed the movie for the worse. The relationship with Ripley and Newt makes so much more sense in the extended cut, Burke's true motivation is hinted at earlier, the Queen is better established and doesn't appear out of nowhere, their intelligence and the evolution of their attack techniques is much better demonstrated. And those changes would only have added a few minutes that could easily have been swapped for other things.

The theatrical cuts of Alien and Aliens are the superior cuts, both edits make use of tension as narrative pacing that additional material diminishes. I prefer Alien to Aliens and both to Empire but the latter upped the ante and broke new ground in every single department.

I had a tough call between Empire and Khan... Ultimately I went with Empire because part of what made Khan such an amazing sequel is how badly the first (and third, and fifth...) movie sucked. Alien is in another class - with Predator... Alien is better, Predator is still awesome.

Oh I didn't even think about that one. Yes. That said they are very different films. One is sort of space horror with some action, the second one is just action. The third was sort of ok I think. But the franchise went to crap after that. So just like Star Wars I tend to just want to remember the THREE movies.
I do enjoy Aliens a bit differently from Alien to. I think I prefer the first half of Aliens to the second half. I like the part where the Marines are all brave and so in the beginning compared to the later part when it all goes to shit. I like the contrast. I find the interaction between the characters more interesting then the actual xenomorph battles. It's been a while now and I can't even remember if the effects aged well. But they where awesome back in ye olden days when I saw it in the cinema, and later the multitude of various directors cuts.

I definitely enjoyed Terminator and especially T2.
T3 and T4 I enjoyed some, but not so much. After that I didn't watch more of the terminator franchise.
I have still watched T1 and T2 quite a few times. They are a nice story by themselves.

It was not only nostalgia, it also returned the focus on character development more than BAD SCARY ROBOT. Still lots of scary robot and all that, but well directed and acted with more plot than most after t2. I'd say genisys was decent as well with the whole robot from human mind aspect.

Yeah at least Genisys tried to introduce an interesting idea. I'd still rank it a little below even T3 though. The biggest let down for me in that and Dark Fate is the ridiculous cartoony superhero style action sequences. But that seems to be the fashion now.

When T2 came out I said "how in the hell could they spend that much money making a movie?" Then I saw the movie. It seems the wrecked vehicles alone should have cost that much!

Terminator is a great film that didn't need a sequel, but if you are going to give it one I'm glad it was that movie. The only problem I have with it is that it breaks the causal loop of the first one (I do enjoy a properly executed Pogo paradox). I understand that breaking it sort of fits with the message they wanted, but I feel it detracted from the franchise in a way I can't seem to articulate.

Yep. I voted for TWOK but T2 is right up there. T1 is more chilling whereas T2 is the crowd pleaser. It sucks that Cameron dropped out of the project after that and the movies seemed to lose their way. I wish they'd stop recycling the same plot points. Even T2 was guilty of that but gets away with it. I mean things like the crashed truck burning the terminator's flesh off versus freezing the T1000 in T2 and the whole luring them into a factory that contains machinery that can target their few weaknesses (The terminators are kinda stupid falling for that, aren't they?).

It was Empire or Wrath, and I chose Empire because equaling the first release (IV in modern parlance) seems like a much more difficult job. Compare with Star Trek where the 1st movie was widely regarded as a "WTF was that?" experience, they had almost nowhere to go but up.
Speculation: Would a bad 2nd Star Trek movie have killed the franchise, and prevented Next Generation from appearing on TV? If so, there was a lot more on the line with it; but no way for them to know that.
So if you think in terms of absolute enjoyment, I'm still going with Empire but if you're thinking of how important it was for a movie not to suck, Wrath is a great choice.

Maybe to non-Trekkies. I for one love that movie. STTMP would have been a fantastic two parter were it on TV. TWOK was just amazing, in no small part due to Ricardo Montalban's performance.

STTMP has a similar problem to many movies at the time, which is the inclusion of a number of psychedelic scenes. For those watching outside of either the Trekkie or psychedelia cultures, they derail the film unnecessarily and are also very memorable. Adding on the standard padded cinematography, thin and philosophical plot, some questionable performances, and other production choices, I don't think it surprising that people have wildly different reactions to that movie.

I'll have to give it another watch sometime. The biggest disappointment for me was some scenes in space that just seemed to drag on too long. It's years since I last saw it but for example I vaguely remember a long, boring sequence with crew members moving around in space suits outside the ship. I figure the viewers were supposed to be wowed by the scale and the special effects but those scenes could've used some work to maintain my interest or add suspense.

The scene is about six minutes long, with Scotty flying Kirk over to the refit Enterprise. Transporters aren't working, so a shuttlepod is needed. Kirk hasn't seen the refit yet, and the scene begins with Kirk talking to Scotty about getting command back after being head of Starfleet operations. In my opinion, the refit Constitution class is the most beautiful ship in all of Star Trek, and it's not close. Jerry Goldsmith scored that scene very well, with the pacing of the music, and how it builds to the moment where the shuttlepod turns, letting Kirk and the audience see the full ship for the first time.
Almost immediately following this is another scene with limited dialogue, where the Enterprise departs drydock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdBmYcMMHJw [youtube.com]. Goldsmith's score really helps this scene, too. It conveys a sense of urgency, that the Enterprise is leaving as early as possible to go intercept V'Ger. Some of the visuals give that feel, like the crewman squeezing between the closing doors, and the sun rising over the Earth. The latter has the feel of leaving in the middle of the night instead of waiting for morning, to try to reach V'Ger as quickly as possible. Although slow, both scenes have a sense of anticipation, where they're building toward something, and hopefully giving the viewer an emotional reaction.

It tries to show how unprepared the Enterprise was to launch, beyond Scotty's protests. When Spock shows up to help correct the issues with the warp engines, the viewer sees why he's essential to the mission. Perhaps say there's one minute to impact, but without the time distortion. Or have the engines overload and require an emergency shutdown to avoid a warp core breach. It's also a bit redundant, because the horrific transporter accident scene earlier also shows the Enterprise's unpreparedness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIiNbDVQMRE [youtube.com].
The Enterprise intercepting the cloud, being attacked by V'Ger, and making contact takes twice as long as the wormhole, but it doesn't feel that way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWF_V8JDN40 [youtube.com]. There's a real sense of imminent danger here, for the first time in TMP, after seeing three Klingon battle cruisers get destroyed in the opening scene, which also is helped by Goldsmith's score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbG3N51MEjM [youtube.com]. The dialogue is helpful to explain the cloud's size and power, and V'Ger's motivation. This works well, though it would have benefited from the cut scene where Spock cries when he senses how empty V'Ger's existence is.
I don't mind any of these scenes except for the wormhole. To this point, the viewer could easily follow along despite the slow pacing. This changes when the Enterprise enters the cloud and does a close flyover above V'Ger. Yes, they're directly examining V'Ger for the first time, but it's tedious, and the viewer doesn't really get any information about what they might be learning in the process, and the visuals are too unfamiliar to be intuitive. If there was some discussion between Kirk, Spock, and Decker about what they're finding during the flyover and how to proceed, much more focused on the bridge than exterior shots, it would have worked much better. This is really where TMP starts to feel tedious, despite the long scenes earlier.

I'm not so sure... Hollywood does a lot of research, sometimes, and by the time they were making Khan they knew the Trek franchise had potential legs... I'd say, rather, that they took a long hard look at everything they did wrong in 1 and said: we're going absolutely opposite in II.

I thought Bud Spencer/Terence Hill were only popular in Europe. "My name is Nobody" is the best, however, you need to watch it in German for all the added humor (the dubbing was more all less freely reinventing the dialogues). You can consider "My name is Nobody" a prequel which is an inverse sequel, so it's fine to discuss it here.

... because SW epIV. could have been a prequal, even with the reveal, the same would not work inthe other two franchise. because Alien was a horror and needed the mystery, whereas Terminator would have lost something with foreknowledge about how kickass Sarah became. Empire was a standalone space opera, and Star Wars always an origin mover for everyone except the badies.

Interestingly, all 3 also had disappointing #3s in my opinion. People seemed to like The Dark Knight Rises, but it really didn't work for me: managing to trap literally the entire police force underground was just eyerollingly easy, Bane's motivation was dumb, and even the title sounds lazy.

When staff allow moderation abuse with a bias for specific users, when the rules are unevenly applied, then staff are liable. Big money funds rightwing propaganda, and leftwing ideology only ever receives lip service. Basically people seem to appease violent assholes because normal people try and reduce harm, sadly this leads populations into supporting rightwing monstrosities like Hitler because not enough people stand up for the truth. I actually came here to say Aliens and T2, but since these are taken...
The Winter Soldier (technically a Part 2 because it's the second Captain America movie, even though it's #9 in the overall MCU) ended up being the best Marvel movie of all time for me. It had a much more interesting plot, didn't set up the standard 'fight the big boss at the end after a journey of self-discovery' that most of the others end up being etc. IMHO, its pace, themes etc set it apart from every other Marvel movie. One of those sequels that's better than the original film.

Nothing in the Marvel franchise, except maybe Iron Man 2, should be eligible for competition - the whole thing is a huge self referential joke of a sequel machine. Every "new" movie is still a sequel, it's like a soap opera in big-screen theater release format.

I have always been a fan of the Spiderman films. No other franchise quite captures the same depth of dilemma faced by a superhero and the concept that no good deed goes unpunished.
Spiderman 2 (2004) was perhaps the best in show of that collection and won numerous awards. It might be argued that it was the movie that made the Marvel Cinematic Universe possible.
And who could fail to love seeing an operational fusion reactor!

I read in another comment that Star Wars should win this because Star Trek TMP was a bad movie, and they had nowhere to go but up with the second movie. Let's make the case for STII.
TMP was a very grandiose production, with a lot of money spent on visual effects that just weren't possible with the TOS budget. It had an outstanding score, composed by Jerry Goldsmith. An arrangement of the TMP main title was used for the TNG theme, but the TMP arrangement is probably better. It's musically more interesting, and the budget was there for things like a larger orchestra. The Klingon Battle theme from TMP has been used elsewhere, including in Star Trek V, First Contact, and by Ron Jones in the TNG episode The Defector. Ilia's Theme is also very moving. TMP suffered from pacing issues, and the plot wasn't as clear as it really should have been. But the director's cut does address some of these issues. There are some really interesting ideas, particularly a really advanced AI that doesn't understand or recognize its creator any longer, and the implications of this. TMP isn't as bad as people think. It was actually profitable, despite costing $44 million to produce.
Gene Roddenberry wrote a sequel for TMP, which involved the Guardian of Forever from TOS, and a time travel plot. Paramount rejected it and was pissed about the cost of TMP. Roddenberry was pushed out of his production role, and Harve Bennett took over. The budget for STII was far more constrained, costing only $12 million. Some things were reused from TMP including sets and some footage. For example, the Klingon ships in the Kobayashi Maru are reused footage of the Klingons from TMP. Still, there had to be a lot of cutbacks. For example, Jerry Goldsmith was much too expensive, and the film was scored by James Horner, who at the time was a young composer who hadn't been involved in any big productions. Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer weren't involved with Star Trek previously and were unfamiliar with TOS. They chose a villain from TOS and constructed a really good story about Khan's desire for revenge against Kirk. The special effects were a bit limited, and I suspect that's due to budget constraints. Still, it's a really good film.
TMP was more about the characters doing their jobs and responding to the situation around them, especially dealing with V'ger. The actual characters aren't particularly important, though Spock is particularly alien after failing to achieve Kolinahr, and Kirk's desire to get back in command even if it means stepping over Decker. STII is much more about the characters and Khan's desire for revenge. Spock is a much warmer character in this film, probably even more so than in TMP. This is a big improvement. One of the scenes cut from TMP was when Spock senses V'ger's thoughts, he cries because he recognizes how empty its existence is, and why purging all of his emotions would not be satisfying. Unfortunately, this got cut from TMP, but it really explains a lot of Spock's transformation. The characters are much more important in STII, and they're written better.
If STII hadn't been successful, I find it hard to believe that Paramount would have been interested in any additional films. It might well have been the end of the Star Trek franchise, especially since Paramount was also no longer interested in Phase II. The task was more difficult because STII had a much smaller budget than TMP, so a lot of sacrifices had to be made in the film's production. It's a great film, and I can't imagine any of the later series like TNG and DS9 would have happened if not for STII. If anything, Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer had a much tougher job with STII because of the budget limitations, while needing the film to be successful for the franchise to continue.
I also want to point out that STII is really the first part of a trilogy. STIII is a very underrated film, where Kirk has a personal obligation to help both McCoy and Spock, even if it means ending his career in Starfleet. At the end of STIII, Kirk is a renegade, facing some very serious charges for his actions. STIV resolves these issues and puts Kirk back as a captain where he belongs. It's a very fun film with a different tone from its two predecessors, but it should be considered part of this trilogy because it resolves the issue of Kirk being a renegade. It's an excellent trilogy, and it lays some of the groundwork for STVI, with Kirk developing a hatred for Klingons because a Klingon killed his son.

There was a lot of merit in TMP - academic, deep thought, deep appreciation kind of merit. Not the kind of merit that would outsell Smokey and the Bandit II in a head to head competition. Khan had that, and that sells tickets, and that's what makes the franchise live on.

The second sequel would be the remake of Movie II, possibly by a different director e.g. Movie II, directed by David Agnew
An example of this would be the British TV series Nobody's Perfect, which was a remake of the American TV series, Maude, which was a sequel to the American TV series All In the Family. So Nobody's Perfect would be the second sequel of All In the Family. All In the Family was the American remake of the first British series Till Death Us Do Part, which had it's own sequel In Sickness and in Health, which probably corresponds to the American Archie Bunker's Place. If you are not confused yet, you should be.

I liked the Voyage Home, not as Science Fiction (as if any Star Trek really qualifies as "hard" Science Fiction), but... as a Marvel style fun romp about town with a bunch of familiar characters, the Voyage Home wasn't a waste of my time - unlike the Search for Spock....

How's this work? Not as intuitive as you might think.
My idea, for anyone to use, is "how many pins did your first CPU have?" Including ha ha my first processor used discrete devices, my first processor used hundreds of ICs, 40 pins from us gen-Xers using the only civilized CPU the 6809 or z80 or the LOL 6502, the PLCC era, the slot era, the 500 pin era, all the way up to the 1000+ pin monsters today.

At the end of the day, you are failing to learn from the cautionary tale that Wrath of Khan presents.
You see, once Khan had escaped his exile on planet Ceti Alpha VI, he could have begun to rebuild his evil empire a thousand different ways, maybe by running for governor of Florida, or by invading Ukraine or, better still, by getting involved in a land war in Asia. Instead, by focussing his efforts on wreaking revenge upon his banisher, he actually hastened his own demise and only succeeded in motivating Spock to sacrifice himself to save his shipmates from the detonation of the genesis device.
Likewise, you might recreate your evil empire in any of a thousand different ways, but you stubbornly insist on directing your energies toward the destruction of Janrinok who is playing you the way Kirk played Khan, and ultimately you will discover that you have authored your own destruction with your two-dimensional thinking and only succeeded in motivating dalek to sacrifice himself here to save the community here from whatever device you imagine might destroy Soylent News.
Then we might expect, that like Spock, dalek will be brought back from the dead, and we can have a whale of a good time in San Francisco. But that is another story for another time.
Does it not occur to you that you could become the Khan Noonien Singh of Meta's Threads?
